Quilting

It is Monday, I think, at 8:22 P.M. We have had dinner and part of the kids are out sledding and part are playing volleyball and I am not sure where the rest are. I am choosing to hide in this room for a while.

It has been a very busy day. We had a tour of the building. They really do a lot for these kids. The kids go to school for the first half of the day and the second half of the day they take their "specials" at the orphanage. They have a room for cooking, sewing, music, art and probably more that I can't remember right now. Oh, I forgot gym. They have a doctor and a dentist. Everything is so old. It is just amazing to me. If we went to a doctors office and it looked like this we would turn around and leave! And the dentist office, oh my. You just can't imagine. Now remember I have told you that they have 120 children. The doctor told us today they only have 1 package of sanitary napkins in stock for the girls right now. How long do you think that will last? Their budget for health care for the children is equal to $1. Of course it is a Socialist country so they have public healthcare, but for anything extra that is all they have.

After the tour we attended a play put on by a group of visiting children. It was Romeo and Juliet. Very entertaining! The Russian Orthodox Priest came to this play and spoke to us. Of course, I have no idea what he said. He sure looked the part.

Shortly after lunch we prepared all the presents for the Christmas party. That was a lot of fun. Each child is getting several gifts. That party will be on the sixth.

In the afternoon we attended their Christmas concert. They emphasize the arts here as well as the rest of Russia. They have a music room where I saw at least 3 pianos and maybe accordions and several guitars. The children played their instruments and sang and danced. This was pretty impressive. They have a lot of talent.

Finally, it was time to quilt. I took one group and another group had a make up demonstration. You will not believe this, but I had 6 boys and 1 girl. Most of the fabric that I brought was pretty girly but we made the best of it. It went so well. The interpreter started out in our room. The sewing machines are the same brand as mine, which helped, but much older. The sewing teacher was there also, which really helped. Caitlin, Caralee and Cydney also helped me. They got them sewn together but still need to do a little cutting and touch up things. It was fun. I took some pictures. Actually, I think the teacher was more excited than the kids. She made one also. Our fabric is so much nicer. If you think about sheets and thread count. The thread count on this fabric must be about 100 or less. It is very stiff. Very poor quality.

By the time we finished up with the quilts it was dinner time. More bread. More cheese. More soup. (good this time) Lots of water. And now get ready for another day.

I think that I said that we were going shopping today. Well we could not go because the weather was to bad. You could never guess what made the weather bad????? It rained!

I hate it that my spell check does not work. When I get home and look over this I am going to be so embarrassed! Just bare with me! More tomorrow!

We plan to attend a drug rehab and have a party for the youth of the church. Until then.

  1. I love the updates, Linda! It's hard to believe you are actually there. Sounds like you are staying very busy. And I'm glad you've not gotten sick. Can't wait to hear all about it when you are home!

  2. What about when you get home...we get together stuff to send over that they need (personal/medical) to help them out. I'd love for our Bible Study to do something like that...is it possible or can they not accept stuff like that...think about it....I am back to work.......blahhhhhhhhh!! Thanks so much for sharing...it helps when I am praying to sometimes pray specifically. Miss you muchly here at work...although I do get a chance to whistle...LOL

  3. Sounds like your days are jam-packed. Why do boys want to quilt? School was quiet today. It was hard to go back in the cold weather. We miss you and wait patiently each day for your updates. Can't wait to here all the stories and finally get to see pictures. What do they do in gym class?

  4. I anticipate reading your blogs everyday, they are so interesting. I can't imagine all that you are getting to witness and do. Rain really kept you from doing anything today!?? Was it because it froze??

A dollar for medical care, unbelievable. How in the world do they take care of them?

It sounds like you are having a great time and getting to do a lot of things. Can't wait till your home with all your stories and pictures.

    Prayers are with you.

  5. Sounds like the quilting went well. They must be able to work their way around the machine if they finished in one sitting. Teenage boys...they are curious creatures. Stay well. You may need a vacation upon your return.

  7. Hi Everyone!
Linda, Sandy told me today about this blog, so I logged on and read all of your posts. Wow, everything sounds so different and so gratifying. We have some snow tonight so we may have some interesting driving tomorrow too, but not as bad as what you describe about the roads there.
Cydney, I missed you in class today! Your sweet smile is something I love to see in 8th period. I hope you are having a wonderful time loving all those kids.
I am praying for all of you and for the children and the staff there. We are wrapping you in prayers just like your quilts will wrap the children in God's love.

  8. Just thought I'd let you know we are getting a 2 hour delay in teh morning. We got the call tonight. I'm sure the folks in Russia would laugh at us, considering what you have told us about their weather and driving conditions. I have the day off tomorrow to take mom for some minor surgery--wouldn't you know it? I still have to get up early. (maybe it will turn into a snow day and I won't have to use a sick day)
From the sounds of our forecast you may come home to weather here like you'll be leaving there! Calling for maybe 4" on Thursday. Have a great Tuesday. God Bless you all.

  10. First thing I do in the morning is run down to the computer to check your latest blog! Thanks so much for letting us be a part of your trip.

County schools were closed today, but not the city schools. We'd had a 2-hr delay and while I was out shoveling the driveway, the call was made to cancel school.

I was thinking about the boys you had in your quilting class and wondered if it was because their other choice was a make-up demonstration?

Is your mind racing with all the things you could do with the kids next year?

I'm asking God to let His glory shine through each one of you today.

"Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life..." Philippians 2:14-15

Waiting to hear your next entry! Nancy
